What is a stock market?
A stock market is where people buy and sell shares. Buy a share and you own a small piece of something. On a real exchange that is a company. Here it is a sports team.
Each team's price is based on its chance of winning the championship. If it wins, every share pays 100 Sporty Coins. You can sell early to lock in a gain, or hold all the way to the title.
How prices change
Real stocks move with supply and demand, company results and sentiment. Team prices move with championship odds, so they rise when a team wins games, gets key players back or clinches a playoff spot. They fall after losses, injuries and, finally, elimination.
Three basic strategies
Buy low, sell high. Buy a team after a loss knocks its price down, then sell once a winning streak lifts it.
Value picks. Look for teams priced below what you think they are worth, and hold until the market comes around.
Momentum. A team on a run often keeps rising. Ride the trend, and be ready to sell before it turns.
Risk and diversification
Diversification means spreading what you own so one bad outcome cannot sink you. Put all 1,000 Sporty Coins on one team and a single elimination wipes you out. Spread it across five to ten teams and you can absorb a bad season. A few ways to spread out:
- Own teams in more than one sport.
- Mix favorites, which are safer with less upside, and underdogs, which are riskier with more.
- Hold some positions to the title and trade others short term.
